Köpråd, specifik 2003 Evo 8

Postby MrB » 15 Mar 2016, 20:12

Tjena Evo club Sweden!

Sorry for any grammer mistakes, the only Swedish I know yet is from conversations with my sambo...
Anyway, as mentioned I'm a past owner of a 2003 STI, looking to purchase an Evo here in Sweden.
I'm interested in a specific Evo 8 on Blocket
http://www.blocket.se/goteborg/Mitsubis ... ?ca=15&w=3

In short;
1. The car has 3 private owners, and 6 in total (Including dealers). CarFax report shows the car as "Leasebil" in case it matters.
2. All stock, 8700 mil.
3. Claimed full service history, but the book was lost at some point and then recovered.
Claimed to recently have all the oil change (engine, transmission, diff, etc.), filters etc. - but no proof! (all the history is there except this claimed maintance work, and timing..)
4. They are not sure if the car has been timed (The water pump has been replaced, but no other indication of timing)
5. The car has some slack in the steering (probably bushes, joints etc.) - requires attention.
6. Brake rotors are still the original as far as I know.
7. The calipers have that annoying fade syndrom.
That of course, before going there and actually seeing the car for myself. I'm sure I will find more when I see the car...

However knowledgeable with cars, I am new to the local market which brings up a few questions I was hoping you can help me with:
1. As Evo owners, what are your thought of this car?
2. Is there a place that you can get the car checked out?
3. What would you pay for this car?

And a general Evo question, is there a specialist workshop such as JRM Racing in Skåne region?

Any and all thought are welcome.
If any of you know the specific car of course I would be happy to hear.

Du kan svara på Svenska om du vil
Tack, och happas att vara en klubb member snart!

Seems like a decent car, pricewise too. I guess that someone had it as a company car :) But it could be a polished turd , one never know :)

Loss of service manual seems strange for that kind of car, but generally the overall condition is usually a good teller. If it has been used as a leasing car the service is probably done correctly.

I guess you could do a M-Test, Motormännens Riksförbund, should at least tell you the obvious problems. Can't remember what it costs.

You could also ask in the Facebook group, both Evoclubsweden and Evo Sverige, usually more attention there.

id make em do the service again if there is no proof and they claim everything is done.
and check the underside so there is not massive rust underneath.
also check so the AYC lights come on and go off again, so there is no problem with the AYC. (others have to correct me on this since i have RS diffs).

HI, thank you both. I am a car guy so I do know how to approach car buying, but being in a new country always takes some of your confidence down... So I appreciate your input.
It does seem like a decent car, I like the idea of it being stock as it's going to be a (somewhat) daily-driver for at least a year.

I wouldn't mind buying the car without the service proof for this year (basically a 90K service), but what worried me is - as an former STI owner with friends owning Evo's, I do know how much shit you can get from these cars if they are improperly maintained. THAT would be my concern here, that this car has been driven hard for a year on old oil (engine, transmissions, diffs) etc. that may not show it's signs now, but slowly will.
When it comes to clutch, brakes, timing etc. it doesn't really matter, once replaced you pretty much "reset" the past service.
What's your thoughts regarding that?

Another thing that scares me is potential rust, which I wouldn't be able to see without lifting the car up. That is the main reason I want to take it to be examined (well, this and perhaps finding more negotiation point)

Regarding the service lights, it's a very important check when approaching any used car- always, but always, turn the switch on and verify sure that all of the lights go on and off to make sure no one took a light out to hide a critical issue from you.
Thank you for mentioning that.

Are there any Evo specialist workshops in Skåne region, such as JRM-Reacing?
I'd love taking part in the club action, I pretty much missed socializing with other car guys, but unfortunately I'm not on Facebook. Are there any meets in Skåne that I might come to say hi?

Again, thank you very much for your assistance, much appreciated.

My gut says no no no.... take next car.

Hi guys, thank you all for taking the time to share your knowledge.
I've taken a closer look at the car, the yellow is a but faded (nothing a good detailing session will not fix), brakes and rear wing are also faded and will require retouching.
The bigger issues right now are that I also spotted the usual rust under the rear wing, in the connection to the boot. This is not a good sign, usually cars that has this will also be rusted around the tail lights (body rust) and potentially other areas. On top of that, they were not able to provide the receipts for the service they claim was done while the book was lost - a bit convenient to loose it after 13 years just in time for the most expensive maintenance work, only to find it a few month later.
I have to say that overall i get the feeling that I need to chase down this salesperson to get information and answer, which I find hard to understand since it should be his interest to "move" the car, especially being an expensive 13 year old import that doesn't offer much other than performance...

I notice that now that the weather starts to clear out there are more and more cars popping on Blocket. This make me confident that the right car is still out there and will not take too long to find.
Well, off to the next car it is .

I am open minded on my car search, not necessarily an Evo 8. To be honest, I'd prefer a 9, and would love a 6 (but the boss of the house claims it's too much of a "toaster with a wing" and wouldn't set foot in one :wtf: )

When I got here and started looking for cars late January it seemed that there are not many options, this was the only offer out there on Blocket (that, and a 9 with unverified 190K+ KM..), So I thought some compromise would be required. Yellow is not really my thing either...
However, now that the weather cleared up a bit I see more cars being sold, so I do believe that the right one for me is out there- soon to be found :D

If we're already on the topic of open minded, the past few days I also started considering a Honda S2000 since I never owned a roadster before, but I'm not quite sure how often will I get to enjoy that particular benefit here in Sweden..
